Karaboudjan - La Pirogue (2025)
According to an old Native American proverb, a person is torn their whole life between the need for the tree—roots, stability—and the canoe—journey, discovery. So let’s set sail, back to the 60s, to California, to the Summer of Love. Let’s light the peace pipe and decide whether to stay or go. The harmonies, the vintage guitars, the old organs, and other relics blend together, and it feels right. The urge to explore is always lurking, but it’s with the wood of the tree that we carve the canoe.
About the Band
Somewhere in the hold of an old Armenian cargo ship: tons of crabs, opium, and mojo risin’. The feedback soars as the words ride powerful rhythms. The sounds come from the East, following the battered tracks of a rock’n’roll born straight from California’s Summer of Love, escaping garages and basements. It all converges on the stormy sea.
Karaboudjan casts off in the south of Aisne/Marne in May 2021, a garage rock duo. Rafi drags his battered electric guitar through old tube amps, also wandering east to the sounds of his saz (Turkish lute). The lyrics are spoken in French, blending poetry with 60s harmonies and heavy reverb, drawing from protest songs and playful words. In the hold, Phil’s drum/derbouka resonates—simple, effective, energetic, and powerful—mixed with analog bass sequences and all kinds of vintage keyboards and synths from half a century ago.
In 2024, the band expands with a mystical bassist (John Mclovepine, always present) and a second drummer for special occasions and grand psychedelic celebrations.
