Muddy - In Medias Res (2026)
It could have been called “Chapter 1”, “1”, or simply been self-titled. But for their debut album, Muddy preferred to borrow a narrative device dear to literature: starting in medias res, in the middle of the action. No introduction, no build-up: the listener is plunged straight into the heart of things, into groove and distortion.
Ten tracks, a patchwork of influences
The ten songs on In Medias Res are original compositions, written and arranged by guitarists Maxence and Vince. The two met through a shared guitar teacher, who encouraged them to pool their ideas. The result is a patchwork of influences that the band happily leaves to each listener to define, firmly rooted in stoner rock and the abrasive side of certain distortions. Thick riffs, crushing rhythms, slow build-ups and psychedelic detours: each track is conceived as a massive, repetitive, sometimes suffocating journey.
The themes are varied: time passing, duality, a certain take on “carpe diem”, artificial intelligence (a title like Large Language Monster leaves little doubt), and the wildfires that ravaged the region in 2022. A charred forest by the ocean features on the cover, and the band itself wonders whether the album was somehow “premonitory”. From Blue Soldier to Buried or Burnt, a single with its own video, by way of Alter Ego, Pilat or L’Ankou, the record closes with the nearly ten minutes of Entering Dreams.
Released on 21 September 2026, In Medias Res was recorded and mixed with Benjamin Mandeau (Cryogen Prod, Bordeaux) and mastered by Thibault Chaumont (Deviant Lab, Nantes), all self-produced. The release party takes place on 27 November 2026 at the Salem Bar in Le Haillan, near Bordeaux.
About the band
Since 2023, Muddy have been exploring the horizons of stoner and desert rock. The Bordeaux quartet, made up of Vincent (rhythm guitar, vocals), Maxence (lead guitar), Tommy (bass) and Louis (drums), sees itself quite simply as a “heavy saturated rock” band, rooted in groove and distortion, where groove is king and heaviness is embraced.
On stage, Muddy go for impact: an uncompromising wall of sound at unreasonable volumes. The band has already played many venues in the Gironde and beyond, from the Abbaye Rock festival to Le Pulp in Bordeaux, La Mécanique des Fluides in Toulouse or Sortie 13 in Pessac, where Desert-Rock.com praised their “heavy rhythms” and “predominant search for groove”, “suggesting real potential”.
