Confusion Field - Resilience Remains (2026)
Confusion Field is the work of one man, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tomi Kankainen. For Resilience Remains, self-released on 25 September 2026 on CD and digital, he did change his approach: the drums were handed to Italian session drummer Martino Malacrida, while he took care of everything else, vocals, keyboards, bass and guitars. Recorded at Sounds of Manala in 2025 and 2026, the album was mixed by Konsta Vehkala and mastered by Brett Caldas-Lima at Tower Studio.
The record is more synth-driven than its predecessors, even if the first single Maintain the Uncertainty, which opens the album at over six minutes, suggests otherwise with its heavy riffing and powerhouse drumming. Martino Malacrida’s powerful, highly dynamic playing is indeed the most notable change, bringing a new dimension to the arrangements. After that first single, released on 28 August, Conjuring Conflict followed on 11 September. The nine tracks, from Sea of Irrelevance to Graceful Deceit (over seven minutes as a closer), run for 47 minutes.
Lyrically, Resilience Remains deals with disillusionment, alienation and the darker mechanisms behind human behaviour in a world shaped by conformity and hidden power structures. Beneath the weight of failure and frustration runs a persistent search for meaning, new ways forward and the possibility of breaking free from the patterns that hold us back.
About the band
Founded in Finland in 2017 by Tomi Kankainen, Confusion Field pairs intricate arrangements with memorable melodies, while the lyrics carry a distinctly northern melancholy. Kankainen’s journey began in the late 1980s as a bassist in local metal bands; over the following decades his projects covered everything from melodic pop to death metal, before he turned, in the 2010s, to writing and recording on his own. The first two albums, Disconnection Complete (2021) and Future Impact of Past Diversions (2023), were recorded with longtime collaborators Petri Honkonen on drums and Markus Jämsen on lead guitars. Confusion Field remains a studio project and does not perform live.
